Sabi literalmente significa "soledad" o "aislamiento".

THE SCORN FOR THE FORM

In painting, the scorn for the form and the clear interest in the meaning is typical of the Zen painting.
The style "angle painting" and the "economy of lines" do of this painting something remote of any
conventional norm. The omission of the forms and of the masses provokes surprisingly an unexpected one
evocative feeling and of esthetic pleasure. The limitations or shortcomings just are apparent and in
reality this supposed imperfection turns into a form of perfection.

Beauty in Zen term is an imperfection and sometimes ugliness. Beauty of the imperfection accompanied in
occasions of antiquity or of primitive rudeness. When we find this combination it is said that
we are before the resplendence "SABI".

Sabi consists of a rustic simplicity without pretensions, of an archaic imperfection, of the apparent one
simplicity or lack of effort in the execution and in the wealth of historical associations.
tools used in the room of tea are basically of this nature. All of them generated
under the Zen influence.

Sabi literally means "solitude" or "isolation". To remain in solitude, without spangles sheens, without
devices fires he is equivalent to resign from any spectacular vision. As a note painted to "I plunged and"
(Japanese variant of the painting to the gouache), simple, sober, without showy colors, or game of forms
infinitely variable, like that the idea of sabi expresses itself.

THE ASYMMETRY, AN ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE JAPANESE ART

The disposition of the room of the tea as well as the instruments used in the ceremony are not
you will regulate. The roof is constructed at least in three different styles. The group and laying in
garden of the footbridges or sandstones is irregular, some tools to serve the tea also are coarse and
asymmetric.

The asymmetry is understood so much in the architecture of some temples Buddhists as in the examples
earlier quoted like idea of "imperfection". This taste for the impefecto finds its inspiration in
Zen spirit. The Zen form contemplates the individual things like perfect in themselves inside its
particular imperfection and at the same time like materialization of the totality in One.

The artistic impulses are always primitive (spontaneous and intuitive) and more innate than the mulberry trees.
The art is born inside the human nature. The morality always turns out to be a conventionality
tax from the exterior, on the other hand the art is irrefenablemente expression of the interiority. Then
we can say that the art is Zen and the morality not necessary.

The symmetry inspires ideas of grace, solemnity and nobility; exactly it happens with the logical formalism
or the accumulation of abstract ideas. The Zen one flees of all these questions.
The intellectual aspires fundamentally to the balance while the Japanese are inclined to
to ignore it, inclining acusadamente towards the instability, the asymmetry and the imperfection.

From here that
the Japanese are not given to the intellectual and philosophical activity with intensity.

THE IMBALANCE, THE ASYMMETRY, THE POVERTY, THE SIMPLICITY, THE SOLITUDE

Since we have seen previously "WABI" and "SABI" is two words that characterize the features
essential of the art and the Japanese culture. Both have its origin in the central truth of the Zen one: "One in
Many and Many in One " o "One remaining like one in Many, individual and
collectively".

THE ZEN ESTHETICS

The Zen esthetic aspect feeds on the Zen asceticism in the sense of the "absence" of "egoism"
personnel and in the finished merger of subject and object in an absolute "Emptiness".
The Zen esthetics chase to receive the spirit of the nature. To receive the spirit of a flower is to take
I contact internally with the extract of the flower. Aprehender firmly the root of the nature, which us
it joins her. Everything what exists is a nature, including the man.

The last end is to achieve the merger of the person (of me) with the nature and with other persons for
to manage to understand the real meaning of the creation. The Zen one tries to live through the nature from
inside this way to find the real foundation of the existence and to stop living as if we were inside
of a sleep, where most of the men is.

The beauty is not in the "form" but in the "meaning". It is possible only to "receive" and to "understand" from one
plane "suprahumano" or "spiritual", free of any limitation. The multiple impediments that appear
when we act from a physical plane they prevent us aprehender the meaning of the existence.
physical and psychological, always awkward and relative movements, motive of confusion, do that the things
turn out to be deceitful to us (inside the called world of the "multiplicity").

El Arte Japones 2º parte. The Japanese Art. 2nd report

1. - THE SCENERY IN THE JAPANESE ENGRAVING OF THE PERIOD EDO

The scenery is the favorite topic of the engraving and of the new society of the bourgeoises and merchants of
Edo (that turned out to be the historical origin of the current Japanese society). The Edo bourgeoises have
you will be avidity of freedom and knowledge: They had no admittance to the world of the Culture like that
like going out of its area or region of residence, except imperial authorization.

The sceneries estmpas
presented in the engravings they suppose for them a way for the illustration, the entertainment and
liberation. A way of knowing new places and also of educating and to teach across the game of
words and literary double meaning that aprecen in the texts that they accompany to the images.

The aprición of the Japanese pictures supposed the beginning of of the new bourgeois art and the dscubrimiento of
what later would be called "a popular culture".

The Zen one chases the integration of the man with the Nature (the scenery). The Japanese there is always
considered to the elmentos naturals like sacred and worthy of the biggest respect. The water, the mountain,
forest across the engraving they turn into a pictorial genre.

2. - THE QUARTERS OF PLEASURE

The quarters of the willows and of the flowers, this way called the pleasure quarters for its streets are
adorned with trees and flowers, there were enclosures walled where the prostitutes or courtesans were meeting.
The world of the vice, the lust and the excitement is personified in the professional courtesan. In the quarters of
pleasure of the city of Edo the woman turns out to be a consumption object.

Numerous Japanese engravings represent courtesans with the barefooted feet or in attitudes
public, domestic or professional. The woman is showed like a fragile woman with small features
and childish, very delicate and infantile. Small hands, thin bodies, without hips and breasts
practically nonexistent, this is the ideal of feminine beauty of this period.

THE JAPANESE SOBER PAINTING

It is a question of the painting which more distinctive feature is the reduction to the minimum of the number of lines or lines
destined to represent the forms on the silk or the role. This spirit is related with
Zen philosophy. The solitude like absolute neglect, the immensity sensation suggested in scarce
(always only essential) lines and shades are the images that recur in the Zen painting.

The shape of reservation and transcendental distancing in the middle of the world of the multiplicity (of
senses) it is known in Japanese like "wabi". Wabi means really "poverty" or also "not to be
according to the society of its time". To be "a poor person" is not to be dependent on the earthly things:
wealth, power, reputation and nevertheless to feel internally the presence of something extremely valuable for
on the time and the social position: this is what essentially constitye the "WABI".

The cult of "wabi" is to feel satisfied with a small and humble hut and with a plate of vegetables
collections in the proximities, while one listens to the soft murmur of a benign soaker
spring.

The adoration of the poverty is probably the cult most adapted in a poor country like Japan. To
sorrow of the form of western life and of the luxuries and modern serviceability that invade it, persists in
the Japanese people an irradicable gasped for the wabi cult.
The excessive profusion of ideas, the brightness or solemnity in the arrangement of the thoughts and in
making of the philosophical systems they are avoided.

On the contrary the satisfaction is chased in
mystical contemplation of the nature and feeling in harmony and to taste with the world.
For very "civilized" and polite that we are in an environment artificially fictitious, we all seem
to possess an innate wish for the primitive simplicity tied to the form of natural life.

The Zen one is ready to break radically with all the forms of the human "artificiosidad" and to notice
in what the nature and its rich simplicity sublies below that is to say. The Zen one does not please of
complexities that are in the surface of the life. The life, in itself, is quite simple. we are
we and our intellect distorsionador of the reality the one that does of the life a complex world and
tangled.

One of the features most typical of the oriental temperament is its aptitude to take the life
from within instead of doing it from the outside.

THE JAPANESE ART: THE ZEN INFLUENCE

The scenery is a piece of Tao, which allows to the observer to integrate into the Nature. The Kami, spirits
of the Nature in the Japanese culture they are sacred. The spirit of the water, of the sun, of the wind etc.
sceneries in the Japanese art express the avidity of freedom and knowledge of the man, also of
beauty.

The influences of the Zen Buddhism and of the exercise of the meditation are clear in the declarations
artistic Zen.El has impregnated deeply all the aspects of the cultural and spiritual life of
Japanese people.

The Zen sense of the solitude in the sense of abandonment, isolation and neglect, the incomprehensibility
of the Absolute one, melancholy feeling they take shape of the works of Japanese art.
The contemplation of the Nature supposes the main route of meditation and of knowledge. (For
East, the Man and the Nature are a Unit and not enemies or rivals as he gets accustomed to
to think about Occident).

The sacred and spiritual expression of the considered scenery since sacred it finds its performance route in
skill of the monochrome ink, the exploded or splashed ink staining with spontaneous form the linen
target.
The art of the brush, of the calligraphy, the art of the target and the black sound otrás practices that they show
virtues of the Japanese art: the simplicity, the intuition, the spontaneity...

THE ART OF THE JAPANESE ENGRAVING (THE PERIOD EDO)

The historical period Edo (ancient name of the current city of Tokyo) that the temporary palzo understands
between 1600-1868 it is characterized by the emergence of a new art: The art of the Engraving, an invention
artistic of the bourgeois proper culture. The bourgeoises had been despised by the aristocratic class
of the "shoguns" and for the imperial family, having this way forbidden the world of the elitist culture. Like
reaction, the bourgeoises, a class enriched by the industry and the commerce, decide to create its own ones
forms of culture across the representations by means of the engravings.

The art of the Japanese engraving with its beautiful pictures printed on role, silks, screens, fans,
vertical rolls it develops in Japan from the period Edo. And it arises accompanied from the heyday of
bourgeoisie. We live in a period where there is restored a strong change of social and cultural perspective in
Japan. There appears a new social class, the commercial and urban bourgeoisie.
The evolution of the engraving is characterized by the step of a subject-matter with religious motives and pictures

Buddhists to others where the treated topics are mundane.
- The pleasure, the diversion, the playful and unconcerned thing (the hornbeam diem Japanese) that looks for the new bourgeoisie
they inspire the following topics:

  1. 1/the natural scenery
  2. 2/daily and idle scenes (foreign to the world of the work) of the bourgeoisie and Scenes and actors of
  3. theater kabuki
  4. 3/scenes of prostitutes and geishas. During the period Edo the carnal commerce and the quarters of pleasure
  5. fureon legalized and institutionalized. The prostitution was legal in Japan until 1958.
  6. 4/women's pictures in general. The woman is a protagonist in its most varied facets: mother,
  7. wife, worker of the field and of the business in the city. The sacrifice of the woman comes even
  8. point of selling its body or the immolation.
