El edificio repite en sus principales proporciones y planta la Catedral de la Dormicion del Kremlin de Moscu, el mas importante templo de la ortodoxia rusa que, a su vez remonta por sus formas a la más antigua y venerada catedral de la Dormicion de Vladimir. El exterior de la catedral atrae con la imponencia de sus fachadas de sobrio ornato, nitidamente dividida por pilastras.
A mediados del siglo XVIII a las cúpulas se les confirió forma acebollada, la cúpula central, cuyo tambor fué alzado, se doro con toda su extensión, y las cuatro cúpulas exteriores se adornaron con estrellas en relieve doradas, sobre un fondo azul oscuro. Las pinturas de su interior, cercanas por su estilo a las de Yaroslav, y el magnifico alto iconostasio de varias filas superpuestas data de finales del siglo XVII.
En el ángulo noroeste de la catedral el nada remarcable sepulcro de los Godunov. Los restos de Boris Godunov por orden del impostor Dimitri fueron sacados del sepulcro real de la Catedral Arcangel del Kremlin y cierto tiempo permanecieron en uno de los monasterios moscovitas, luego ellos fueron transportados a la laura de la trinidad y de San Sergio, de la cual Godunov fue protector y generoso donante.
