IVAN PETROVICH ARGUNOV..Portrait of an unknow Peasant...Retrato de una campesina desconocida.

Russian painter and teacher, one of the founders of the Russian school of portrait painting. He came from a family of serfs, belonging to the Counts Sheremetev, that produced several painters and architects. He had grown in the family of his uncle, Semyon Mikhaylovich Argunov who was a steward of princess Cherkassky and later a major-domo for count Sheremetev.

In about 1746-47 he was a pupil of Georg Christoph Grooth (1716-49), who painted portraits of the Sheremetev family. With Grooth, Argunov worked on the decoration of the court church at Tsarskoye Selo (now Pushkin).

A full-length icon of St John of Damascus (1749; Pushkin, Palace Museum), in Rococo style, is distinguished by its secular, decorative character. The Dying Cleopatra (1750; Moscow, Tretyakov Gallery) is typical of Rococo decorative painting of the mid-18th century, with its striking combination of light, soft tones.

Argunov subsequently in the 1760s painted in a quite different style, mainly producing portraits, of which about 60 are known. Among the first of these are pendant portraits of Ivan Lobanov-Rostovsky and his wife (1750 and 1754; St Petersburg, Russian Museum), in which the sitters are idealized, as in ceremonial court portraits. The colour schemes of the two portraits are complementary, a device Argunov was to favour, and the feel of materials is admirably rendered. A certain flatness and stiffness in the figures recalls the old tradition of parsun (semi-iconic) painting.

In 1770 Argunov became the majordomo for the Sheremtev's house on Millionnaya street, then the majordomo of the Moscow house of Sheremetevs, then one of the stewards for their estates. He painted much less but it was in that time (1784) he created his masterpiece The Portrait of an Unknown Peasant.

Modern studies suggest that the woman on the portrait was the serf actress and singer of counts Sheremetevs, Anna Kovalyova-Zhemchugova. Between the second half of 1780s until his death in 1802 Argunov did not paint but spent all his time managing different estates and businesses of Sheremetevs.

Argunov was a teacher of art. He taught painting classes beginning in 1753. Among his students were Anton Losenko, Fyodor Rokotov, Golovachevsky and Sablukov - all four future teachers of the Academy. Argunov's sons were also his pupils. Two of them, Nikolay Argunov and Yakov Argunov became painters, while the third, Pavel Argunov, became an architect.

La Inmaculada Concepción. Zurbaran...

Spanish painter of saints and churchmen. His use of sharply defined, often brilliant, colors, minute detail in simple compositions, strongly three-dimensional modeling of figures, and the shadowed light that brightly illuminates his subjects all give his paintings a solidity and dignity evocative of the solitude and solemnity of monastic life. His work at its best fuses two dominant tendencies in Spanish art, realism and mysticism.

Zurbarán was born of Basque ancestry in Fuente de Cantos, Badajoz Province, on November 7, 1598. He was apprenticed to a minor Spanish painter in Seville but appears to have been influenced early in his career by Michelangelo. In 1617 he went to work in Llerena, and in 1629, at the invitation of the town council, he settled in Seville. Zurbarán spent the next 30 years there, with the exception of two years (1634-35) that he spent in Madrid working for the royal court. Zurbarán left Seville in 1658, after his reputation declined there; he died in Madrid on August 27, 1664.

Zurbarán was only slightly influenced by Diego Rodriguez Velázquez and Jusepe de Ribera. Late in his career, however, he changed his style, according to some critics, for the worse, after being influenced by Bartolomé Estéban Murillo.

Zurbarán's earliest known work, painted when he was 18 years old, is Immaculate Conception (private collection, Bilbao). Other notable early works include Crucifixion (1627-29, Museum of Fine Arts, Seville); several large scenes of the life of St Peter Nolasco (died 1256), the founder of the Mercedarians, originally done for a convent in Seville (1628-29); The Apotheosis of St. Thomas Aquinas (1631, Museum of Fine Arts, Seville); and Still Life with Oranges (1633, Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena).

INFORME RECARTE....RECARTE´S REPORT

I have just ended of this book of the economist Alberto Recarte, have to say only that it is a clear book, easy to read. The author has been polished in using an easily accessible language to the public who lacks economic formation, which is of being grateful at the time of reading it, púes otherwise we would get lost in complex economic, inaccessible terms for the laymen in the matter.

The book analyzes the situation and world economic evolution from the explosion of the crisis about 2007, as well as its ramifications on a global scale, with parentheses for the analysis of the Spanish economy, so as the author exhibits in the book...: since it is possible to have gone on from the happy world of the globalization to the current world recession.?

The answer is multiple, and it goes from the bad functioning of the Central banks, - especially of the North American Federal Reserve - which allowed the growth of real estate bubbles and of credits in half a world and, for other the practice of protective politics that have resulted in repletions of the exporting sectors of another half world, like China and other Asian countries.

The Spanish economy has taken part entirely in all this process, with an aggravating circumstance, we have financed our outrages of consumption and investment with exterior saving, up to the point that Spain is at present one of the most indebted countries of the world. A process of which one has not realized due to the power anestesiánte the euro, but which today we all suffer in the shape of scarcity of liquidity, lockout and unemployment, as well as an incessant fall of the revenue per-capita.

Ambrosius Bosschaert...The Elder

Flemish flower and still-life painter, active mainly in the Netherlands, where he is recorded in Middelburg from 1593 to 1613 and later in the Utrecht Guild in 1616. Although he spent the major part of his life in the Netherlands, Bosschaert's style was basically Flemish - similar to that of Jan Brueghel, with whom he ranks in quality and as one of the pioneers of flower painting as an independent genre. His bouquets have a rich variety of flowers from different seasons arranged in a formal way.

The degree of finish and exactitude, and the subtlety of the colour, are exceptional. His Vase of Flowers (Mauritshuis, The Hague, c.1620) is one of the most reproduced of all flower pieces. Bosschaert may fairly be said to have initiated the Dutch tradition of flower painting and his style was continued by his three sons, Ambrosius the Younger, Abraham, and Johannes, and also by his brother-in-law, Balthasar van der Ast.
