El lugar donde hoy se alzan los grande almacenes GUM, justamente en el centro de Moscú, era ya en el pasado la sede de un mercado que en el siglo XVIII cedió el puesto a los grandes espacios del edificio actual que se asoma a la Plaza Roja. El cuerpo de esta gran construcción se articula en 3 galerías cubiertas por lucernarios abovedados y atravesados por innumerables puentecillos y pasajes.
Para los moscovitas, los almacenes GUM son una tradición neta para hacer compras. Si uno se pierde entre la gente, la fuente situada en el centro es sin duda el mejor punto de encuentro.
