Alexandre Cabanel.....FRANCIA

Pintor francés de retratos y sujetos históricos en el estilo académico. Entró en el École des Beaux-Arts en París a la edad de diecisiete años. Expuso en el Salón por primera vez en 1844 y ganó el Prix de Rome en 1845. Su pintura del Nacimiento del Venus se mostró en el Salón en 1863 y fue comprada por Napoleón III por su propia colección personal. Ese mismo año se hizo profesor del École des Beaux-Arts.

Las imágenes eróticas de Cabanel, encubridas en el historicismo, apelaron a la propiedad de los niveles más altos de sociedad. Era un opositor decidido de los Impresionistas, sobre todo Manet, aunque la respuesta negativa del establecimiento académico de realizar la importancia de nuevas ideas y fuentes de inspiración resultara finalmente ser la perdición de la Academia.

French painter of portraits and historical subjects in the academic style. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris at the age of seventeen. He exhibited at the Salon for the first time in 1844, and won the Prix de Rome in 1845. His painting The Birth of Venus was shown at the Salon in 1863, and was bought by Napoleon III for his own personal collection. That same year he was made a professor of the École des Beaux-Arts.

Cabanel's erotic imagery, cloaked in historicism, appealed to the propriety of the higher levels of society. He was a determined opponent of the Impressionists, especially Manet, although the refusal of the academic establishment to realize the importance of new ideas and sources of inspiration would eventually prove to be the undoing of the Academy.
