El fruto sin nombre del pecado.
La Biblia narra cómo Eva y despues Adan comieron del fruto del árbol prohibido a pesar de la prohibición divina, lo cual les valió la expulsión del Paraíso.
Sin embargo el texto no precisa en ninguna parte de que tipo de fruto se trataba, si por lo general la cultura cristiana lo ha identificado con una manzana, la tradición hebrea menciona cuatro posibilidades simbólicas que distinguen entre cuatro tipos de tentaciones particulares: La uva, que significaría la embriaguez del poder, el trigo, que marca el poder conferido por el conocimiento, (el pan sustituye a la leche cuando el niño tiene edad de manifestar su razón); el higo, ya que Adan y Eva despues de su pecado, "...se les abrieron entonces los ojos a los dos y al darse cuenta de que estaban desnudos, cosieron hojas de higuera, y se hicieron unos ceñidores..." eligieron el árbol mas cercano, por lo tanto el del pecado para cubriser, el cidro, totalmente comestible como debía serlo el mismo árbol, y cuya forma comparan los rabinos con la del corazón humano.
Con gran prudencia, los comentaristas dejaron la pregunta abierta, así ninguna especie ha de sufrir la verguenza de haber participado en cierto modo en el pecado original.
La elección de la manzana
La palabra latina malum, que significa mal, significa también manzana. Se comprende que a partir de la traducción latina de la biblia, haya sido fácil confundir los dos significados. Este error no excluye una elección deliberada, puesto que este fruto podía marcar mas el imaginario y proporcionar un motivo sencillo a la pintura.
Malum puede designar también el membrillo, la granada, el melocotón, la naranja o el limón. que además suelen aparecer en las imágenes...no obstante, la manzana presentaba la ventaja de establecer una continuidad con la Antiguedad, prolongando el significado que el "fruto de la discordia, reviste en la mitología , en efecto, el pastor Paris, ofreció una manzana de oro a Venus y eligió asi a la más bella de las diosas que a cambio le había prometido el amor de Helena.
Secuestrando a esta última del hogar de su esposo, el rey Menelao, París tomó una decisión cargada de consecuencias, ya que provocó ni más ni menos que la guerra de Troya. La leyenda narra que con motivo de la boda de Hera con Zeus, la tierra le ofreció manzanas de oro que crecián en el jardín de los dioses y que guardaban las Hespérides, ninfas de poniente, ayudadas por un dragón.
