Sabinas

Según la leyenda, Rómulo fundó Roma en el año 753 AC, Dado que habia pocas mujeres, invitó a una fiesta a las vecinas sabinas, a las que mas tarde, capturarían y violarían con la intención de unir los pueblos, "a traves del más grande y más sólido de los vinculos", muchos fueron los pintores y escultores que representaron esta escena, entre ellos Pietro da Cortona o Giambologna.

Rómulo prohibió que las mujeres volvieran a sus hogares, lo que provocó que sus padres y hermanos marcharan hacia Roma. Entre tanto las mujeres ya se habian casado con sus violadores, Se lanzaron en medio de ambos ejercitos, suplicando con palabras dulces y cariñosas, hasta acabar con la lucha.

En este lienzo de Jacques Louis David, se representa a las sabinas tratando de interceder entre sus padres, hermanos y sus esposos.
