Atenea, (Minerva en la mitología romana), era la Diosa de la guerra y la sabiduria, así como la protectora de las artes. En este cuadro del siglo 15, Botticelli la representa en un estilo especialmente provocativo, en que el atrevido vestido enfatiza sus curvas. Sostiene una alabarda, -hacha- el cual es su atributo como diosa de la guerra, tambien se la puede identificar por las ramas de olivo, que decoran el pelo y la ropa. (Atenea crea el olivo, cuando lucho con Neptuno por la ciudad de Atenas, a la que dio su nombre.).
El Centauro, mitad hombre, mitad bestia, retrocede a medida que la diosa se acerca a el, y acaricia suavemente su pelo. Parece estar algo afligido, quiza porque la naturaleza civilizadora de Atenea, le hace ser consciente de su vileza. Los anillos entrelazados, bordados en el vestido de la diosa, son el emblema de la familia Medici de Florencia.

It supports a halberd, - axe - which one is its attribute like goddess of the war, also it is possible to identify it for the branches of olive tree, which decorate the hair and the clothes. (Atenea creates the olive tree, when I fight against Neptune for the city of Athens, which it named).
The Centaur, half man, half beast, steps back as the goddess approaches to, and caresses gently its hair. It seems to be slightly upset, perhaps because the civilizing Atenea nature, makes him realize its meanness. The rings interlaced, embroidered in the garment of the goddess, there are the emblem of the family Medici of Florence.
