Según cuenta una antigua leyenda rusa Sadkó era un rico comerciante de Nóvgorod conocido por su gran habilidad tocando el gusli (un antiguo instrumento de cuerda ruso). En medio de un viaje en el mar el rey de las aguas paró sus naves, no les dejaría marchar hasta que Sadkó descendiera al fondo del mar y se casará con una de sus hijas, así podría oirle tocar el gusli siempre que quisiera.
En el cuadro las princesas del mar, vestidas con trajes de diferentes países, desfilan ante Sadkó, pero él esta mirando a la joven Chernávushka que está en la parte superior del cuadro vestida en un traje campesino ruso.
El pintor tomó como modelo para la imagen de Sadkó al pintor Victor Vasnetsov.
Esta obra forma parte de la colección del Museo Ruso de San Petersburgo.
According to account an ancient Russian legend Sadkó was a rich merchant of Novgorod known by its big skill touching the gusli (an ancient Russian stringed instrument). In the middle of a trip in the sea the king of the waters stopped its ships, it would not allow them to go until Sadkó was descending to the bottom of the sea and he will marry one of its daughters, this way it might hear him touching the gusli whenever he wanted.
In the picture the princesses of the sea, dressed in suits of different countries, parade before Sadkó, but he is looking at young man Chernávushka who is in the top part of the picture dressed in a Russian rural suit.
The painter took the painter Victor Vasnetsov as a model for the Sadkó image.
